Abstract

This study intended to examine water resources degradation and its spatial extent in Komadugu Yobe Basin, Nigeria. The study adopted methodology of classification of satellite imageries of land cover changes to collect data. The findings from satellite imageries analysis show land and water resources degradation and its aerial extent of the study area. Surface water which occupies about 3790.545km2 representing 18% of the total area in 1972 was reduced to 584.002km2 representing a paltry of 3.2% of the total area in 2017. The findings also revealed that there is serious decline in surface water and rainfall which might have resulted to conflicts between different water resources users in the basin. It is recommended that dam re-optimization, river training (desilting and typha grass clearance a34 provision of hydro-meteorological network across the basin to collect data for decision support would go a long way in addressing water resources degradation of the basin.
